When I was a nipper learning to swim down shore, we were told not to worry because we would float. "All Corkheads can float"

Corkheads are descended from the original Island settlers who floated over from the mainland......."the silly buggers didn't sink 'cos they had cork heads".

Somewhen back in the 70s somebody wrote a nonsense book about the Island and made up a silly story about Islanders caulking ships. This was picked up by Whitbread brewery when they renamed a pub in Sandown.

So those who have moved over from the mainland think it is Caulkhead, but we Corkheads know better.
